1. Objective
TOHO GAKUEN SCHOOL OF MUSIC provides two kinds of non-degree programs where international students can study music and gain practical experience. Both programs are mainly focused on lessons given by our excellent faculty members.
2. Courses
(1) Visiting Student Course A (1 year)
a. Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must have obtained at minimum a high school diploma, although exceptions may be considered under certain special circumstances.
Please submit the following qualification documents, including the application form (Form SSA-A).
To obtain your “student” residence status, the applicant must take classes for at least 10 credit hours, and no more than 12 credit hours per week.

・ Copy of your passport (copies of pages displaying the passport number and your photograph).
・ Photograph taken within the past 3 months (4 cm long × 3 cm wide)

・ A copy of the diploma certificate and academic transcript from your last school attended and graduated.
・ A letter of recommendation from your instructor of your intended major (in English or in Japanese).
・ A video recording of your performance (on DVD etc.), or a score of your composition (paper-based or in PDF format).
① In the video recording, please introduce yourself briefly in English or Japanese, prior to your performance.
② The video recording must be a performance by the applicant himself/herself.
③ Recording Media Etc. (Please submit individual tracks for each work on your video. Your recording media will not
be returned.):
◎ If submitted on DVD-R:
・ Please check whether the recording can be reproduced on DVD players, as well as on computers.
・ Both DVD-video and AVCHD formats are acceptable.
・ DVD-R media will not be returned.
・ With a permanent (oil-based) marker, please be sure to write directly on the media itself, your full name, and the names of
the composers and pieces performed.
◎ If submitted on USB:
・ Save your data using either MP4, WMV or AVI formats.
◎ If submitted by email attachments or by file sharing:
・ Save your data using either MP4, WMV or AVI formats.
・ If your e-mail account capacity allows you to attach the data file, please send it as an attachment. However, we cannot
accept codec or compressed files.
・ If your data attachment exceeds the capacity of your mail service, you can share your file by uploading it to Google Drive, Dropbox or YouTube, and send us the link. If a password is used, please keep and send us the password.
b. Term of Study
One year starting in April or September. If a student wishes to study for more than one term year, a new application must be
submitted each year, to be rescreened and reevaluated.
c. Forms of Lessons and Classes
In principle, one 60-minute lesson will be given per each week.
Lessons and classes are basically given in Japanese, although some faculty members may use English.
d. Subjects and Hours of Elective Classes

Students must take 10 to 12 credit hours of classes per week, from the elective classes listed [HERE] and also including principal study (i.e. instrumental lessons) of your major.
Some restrictions may apply depending on the student’s Japanese language proficiency.
e. Certificate of Completion
With respect to the principal study, a completion exam will be conducted, and a certificate of completion will be given to those who pass the exam. Regarding classes other than instrumental lessons, credits will be granted depending on the results of exams.
f. Tuition
JPY 1,800,000 (per year) *non-refundable
(Note) Please remit (by bank transfer) the full amount of the tuition by the deadline date written on the notification of acceptance. If receipt of remittance cannot be confirmed, your admission will be cancelled. (Please bear the bank transfer fee.)
g. Application Fee
JPY 27,500 *non-refundable
(Note) When the complete application is received, we will notify you of the bank account details for payment of the application fee. When the fee receipt is confirmed, we will start the screening process. (Please bear the bank transfer fee.)
h. Timing of Application and Application Procedures

・ For Admission in April
① By December 31 of the preceding year, submit your video recording of your performance of audition pieces on DVD
etc. and Form SSA-A, together with other required documents (as described above).
② The submitted video recording of your performance and Form SSA-A will be screened, and the results will be
notified to you by e-mail.
③ A live examination of your performance will be held on campus on or around February 10.
④ Final results will be emailed to you on or around February 17.
・ For Admission in September.
① By March 31, submit your video recording of your performance of audition pieces on DVD etc. and Form SSA-A and
other required documents (as described above).
② The submitted video recording of your performance and Form SSA-A will be screened, and the results will be
notified to you by e-mail.
③ A live examination of your performance will be held on campus on or around May 31.
④ Final results will be emailed to you on or around June 6.
(2) Visiting Student Course B (up to 90 days)
a. Eligibility Requirements
The applicant shall be a person who loves music and strives for excellence in one’s performance skills.
Please submit the following qualification documents, including the application form (Form SSA-A).

e. Course Certificate
A course certificate will be issued to students who display a good attitude by proving to be working for excellence in lessons.
f. Tuition
JPY 200,000 (per month) [200,000 yen × number of months] *non-refundable
(Note) Please remit (by bank transfer) the full amount of the tuition by the deadline date written on the notification of acceptance. If receipt of remittance cannot be confirmed, your admission will be cancelled. (Please bear the bank transfer fee.)

i. Notification of Results
The result of screening of the Form SSA-A and the video recording of your performance on DVD will be notified by e-mail.
3. Additional Information
(1) Upon admission, you will be asked to register the contact details of a person you know who lives in Japan.
(2) A student ID card will be issued.
(3) You will be allowed to practice in the practice rooms on campus. However, school regulations for conditions of use will
apply.
(4) A student dormitory is available (for a fee) for female students who wish to live in a dormitory.
(5) There are practice rooms available for female students in the dormitory.
(6) Introductions to Japanese language schools are provided.
(7) Housing information is provided at the school office.
(8) No scholarships related to tuitions are available for international students studying from abroad.
(9) There will be no lessons or classes held during the following periods;
・ Examination periods – Two weeks in each of July and January
・ Summer break (From August 1 to around September 16)
